26 Sept 98, S.H.A.N. (Chiangmai, Thailand)
On 9 September, 44 elected MPs from the non-Burman alliance, the United
Nationalities League for Democracy (UNLD), were "invited" by the junta.
There was some disappointment reported by the non-Burmans on the NLD's
"arbitrary" appointment of Arakan and Mon representatives as
representatives
of the non-Burman MPs. The source told S.H.A.N., "they were there only to
liaise
between the NLD and the non-Burman MPs. They don't have the mandate
to represent them (i.e. non-Burman MPs).
The source also reported the Shan States Peace Committee's(S.S.P.C)
meeting
on 14 September. "Sao Hsoten wanted to fully support the NLD, but the
meeting
did not agree with him." Later, the SSPC passed the resolution to
reconciliate
between the belligerents i.e. the NLD and the junta.
It was also reported that the MI had called a meeting with leaders of the
non-ceasefire
groups on 19 September. The purpose was to press them to denounce the
NLD,
said the source.
