Burma lodged no protest - Ministry
The Foreign Ministry yesterday denied that Burmese authorities had lodged a
protest with the Thai government over a recent attack by Karen rebels that
left two Burmese villagers dead.
Instead, a letter signed last week by Burma's secretary to the Thai-Burmese
town border committee, Lt Htay Aung, intended to seek "cooperation" from
the Thai side in suppressing the Karen National Union, said Saroj
Chavanaviraj, the ministry permanent secretary.
The letter followed an incident on September 25 during which four rounds of
heavy artillery were fired at Kok Ko border village in Burma opposite Tak's
Mae Ramat district. The Burmese authorities at the time said the attack was
made from Thai soil.
Mr Saroj said it was unconfirmed whether the attack came from Thailand.
He quoted the Supreme Command authorities responsible for the area as
reporting that the attack resulted from a conflict of interest between the
KNU and the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army backed by the military government.
Mr Saroj also quoted the Supreme Command as assuring that it conformed with
Thai policy against the use of Thai soil by any foreign force for political
or military operations. Classifieds
