Press Release 12/98 of Myanmar Embassy, Tel-Aviv
NLD's Unlawful Acts To Undermine Peace, Stability
Must Be Prevented From Doing Harm
When the Tatmadaw (Armed Forces) assumed responsibility in 1998, the
country was on the verge of disintegration through chaos and anarchy.
However the Tatmadaw was able to bring back conditions of peace,
stability and law and order. After regaining stability, the Tatmadaw
placed the national unity as its first priority and tried to achieve
unity within the country. It is undeniable that significant progress
has been achieved in reuniting the nation as well as in bringing the
armed insurrection to an end. The Tatmadaw Government could make
peace with 17 nationalities organizations.
The present Tatmadaw Government, the State Peace and Development
Council, has no intention to hold the State power indefinitely since
it is the belief of the armed forces that state power belongs to the
people and must be returned to them. To accomplish this task, the
Government laid down a systematic programme for the transition to a
peaceful, developed and democratic State. Considerable extent of
success has been made in every sector. Today, Myanmar is enjoying
unprecedented peace and stability and is poised to achieve further
great progress and development.
In accord with the defiance political theory, the National League for
Democracy (NLD) political party has taken a very negative and
confrontational attitude and activities. When the NLD came to
realize that their efforts to get the state power by destabilizing the
nation were to no avail, they issued an ultimatum to the Government to
call a parliament. As the attempt failed, the NLD is now trying to
convene a parliament in their own and announced that they had formed
the committee delegating the representatives elected in the 1990
multiparty democracy general elections on their own. In its
endeavours to gain power by short cut, the NLD is indulging in hasty
and irrational acts which can only cause harm to existing peace,
stability and economic development of the nation.
The majority of the public and all nationalities groups are worried
about these unlawful acts of the NLD which may cause a great danger to
the State and deteriorate peace which have been achieved through
various difficulties. All the nationalities groups made declarations
of their attitude in connection with the acts of the NLD. The common
attitudes of the nationalities groups can be seen in their
declarations are: the nationalities groups have made peace with
Government with the aim of maintaining peace and endeavouring for
their regional development; the acts of NLD are in contravene with the
existing Myanmar Laws and not be supported; only the present
Government could bring peace and development of the entire people and
the nation; vow to cooperate with the Government to build a modernized
nation in which disciplined democracy flourishes.
With the concern of the NLD's unlawful activities, people's rallies
were held in Yangon, Mandalay, Sagaing, Myitkyina, Pyay, Bago,
Mawlamyaing, Keng Tung etc... . People of various strata of life of
those major cities in the country expressed their genuine desires and
attitudes. From the people's rallies, it is learnt that the entire
people wish to see the country prosperous and developed and show their
disgust over the tricks of NLD are now impatient, unhappy with the
Government's magnanimity and urged the Government to take action
against the party. And the entire people vow to crush those who are
engaged in unlawful acts in accord with the Four Points People's
Desire: oppose those relying on external elements acting as stooges,
holding negative views; oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of
the State and progress of the nation; oppose foreign nations
interfering in internal affairs of the State; crush all internal and
external destructive elements as the common enemy, and joined in the
Government's endeavours for building a disciplined democracy.
Like any government anywhere in the world, the present Government has
the fundamental obligation to protect the rights of all its citizens.
In order to fulfil the wishes and desires of its people and
nationalities, the present Government will maintain and safeguard the
stability of the State. To bring a better life for the people of
Myanmar, the NLD's unlawful acts to undermine peace and stability must
be prevented from doing harm.
