(CHINA FORMS COMPLETE EDUCATION SYSTEM)-->
BEIJING (Oct. 11) XINHUA - China's education sector has recorded
significant progress over the past 20 years and continues to be a
government priority for development, according to the State Statistics
Bureau (SSB).

Figures show that China had achieved great successes in promoting the
nine-year compulsory education system, with the system introduced to 91
percent of its counties by the end of 1997. Primary schools have
enrolled nearly 99 percent of the country's school-age children.

Secondary education, especially in terms of professional training, has
boomed over the past two decades. The number of students receiving
professional training in senior high schools during 1997 hit 10.89
million, up 4.8-fold on 1980 figure.

The SSB also reported that a comprehensive system of college education
had been formed, with China's colleges enrolling one million students
in 1997, up 2.5-fold on 1978 figure.

Adult educated has also been the subject of rapid growth, with related
institutions graduating approximately 10 million students. In addition,
the national drive to eliminate illiteracy has been carried out
extensively in 13 provinces.

However, China's overall education level remains relatively low,
according to the SSB. For example. some relatively poor and needy areas
are trapped in a vicious cycle revolving around the the lack of
qualified personnel. The bureau suggested the introduction of reforms
such as restructuring education administration mechanisms and improving
in teaching methodology.
