KEEPING his promise to suppress police corruption, Bangkok police chief
Wannarat Khotecharak on Wednesday transferred four senior Makkasan officers
shortly after a raid on a massage parlour where several Burmese women under
18 had worked as service girls.
Paris Massage Parlour has also been closed for 30 days. The order was made
shortly after the completion of the raid, jointly led by Chat Pattana Party
MP Paveena Hongsakul, which saw 23 Burmese women, 10 of whom were under 18,
arrested for illegal entry.
Station chief Pol Col Maitree Sriwatcharanon was transferred to an inactive
post attached to the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB), while Pol Lt Cols
Worraniti Weeraphat, Thitinan Athitayanon, and Suttha Kannasutr were
subject to immediate investigation.
Earlier, Wannarat issued an order strictly requiring all police officers
attached to the MPB's General Staff Division to sign in and out, to solve a
long-standing problem regarding their work-shy attitude within this
particular division.
He ordered that all sign books be under close supervision to prevent one
officer signing the name of another to cover up for the latter's absence
from duty.
One-fifth of the more than 50 officers discharged from the division last
year was because of absenteeism, said Division chief Pol Maj Gen Wibulsak
Sitthaidecha, who received a direct order from Wannarat.
The MPB chief also said that the man who was responsible for two bomb
hoaxes at Sinthorn Building off Wireless Road in the past two days was a
Thai, judging from his voice on the phone. Wibulsak said he would have ''a
big talk'' with the person after arresting him.
