SHAMEFUL AND ORCHESTRATED MASS MEETINGS

The shameful and orchestrated public meetings that the State Peace and 
Development Council has launched in Burma against the National League 
for Democracy and its general secretary Daw Aung Sun Suu Kyi must be 
condemned world wide.

The modus operandi is as follows- Written speeches are prepared  by the 
information Ministry on its letter head and in consultation with the 
District SPDC where the public meeting is scheduled to be held. 

Speakers are hand-picked and are drilled so that the performance at the 
meeting will be as effective as possible. Rigid rehearsals with military 
precision in the presence of Major Gen Kyi Aung (Minister for 
Information) and /or Colonel Tin Hlaing ( Minister for Home Affairs) are 
required. When the performance of the speakers are approved the dates 
for the public meetings are fixed and announced. These dates can  be 
changed at the whim and fancy of the authorities. 

Above mentioned are received from one of such speakers. He also said 
that all speakers including him received a plot of land as a reward.

Our information about the preparations for the mass meeting to be staged 
in Bassein, Irrawaddy Division is that every household in the entire 
division (population is more that 8 million ) has been required to pay 
Kyats five hundred and to sign a letter in advance indicating his/her 
support and agreement with resolutions to be passed at the meeting.

There are 26 Township in this division. Estimating that five persons 
make up a household the number of household will be 1.6 million which 
will fetch a total of eight hundred million kyats. 

Attendance at the public meeting is compulsory for the civil servants, 
fire brigade and red cross members, the USDA and other affiliated 
organisation that have been formed by the SPDC. These persons are 
required to meet their own transportation costs to and from the place 
where the meeting is scheduled to be held.

Attendance on the day of the meeting is expected to be around twenty 
five thousand mostly from the township of Bassein. Lunch will be 
provided to those attending and Kyats one hundred and fifty to two 
hundred will given to the individuals as a reward. Total cost to the 
authorities for staging this mass demonstration could be twenty million. 
The balance 780 million Kyats will be pocketed by the local authorities 
including the commander of the South West command, SPDC members from the 
division, districts, township, wards and villages and USDA members. This 
is great way of finding money to pacify the authorities at every level. 
Can you understand why the cronies of the SPDC welcome these mass 
meetings. For the ordinary man in the street it means more tears, more 
heart break, more toil and more suffering ! How will it all end?
