He was right to
resign
Gen Surayud Chulanont, the army commander-in-chief, has set a
good example by resigning from the senate and the boards of some
state enterprises. The move, he said, would give him more time to
concentrate on his work at the army.
The resignations have had great ramifications because several active
military officers are also members of the senate and are on the boards
of many state enterprises.
Although Gen Surayud insisted that his resignation from non-military
positions was a personal affair, it is bound to cause uneasiness among
his fellow officers. It is difficult to know what they really think.
It is customary for the government to appoint top military officers to
the senate and state enterprise boards. This is done to ensure military
support for the government.
The military itself is happy with this political connection because it
provides them with financial benefits. Gen Surayud broke with this
longstanding tradition by resigning from all non-military positions.
While his fellow officers have said nothing, the media has been hailing
the decision. Gen Surayud worked hard in the senate, and the other
upper house members will miss him. But the army will benefit a great
deal from this decision.
First, Gen Surayud can now devote all his time and energy to his work
with the army.
Second, he can now distance himself from politics. The army can now
become a true organ of the state.
Finally, the army can now stand tall and be proud of its honourable
role in society.
