History society, Department of History, University of Witwatersrand =
arrange a talk on "Human Rights violation in Burma" on 29th November =
1998. The talk held in Museum of Anthropology, Central block at Wits =
campus.
Dr. Thein Win, Free Burma Coalition of South Africa was invited by =
academic historians of History society. The video tape, addressed from =
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to the UN Commission on Human Rights was shown to =
audience. Academics from University of Witwatersrand were attended.=20
Wits is the one of the biggest University in Southern Africa and =
recognised both nationally and internationally for the quality of its =
graduates and its excellence in teaching, research and service to =
industry and society. It has a long standing commitment to University =
autonomy, academic freedom and non-discrimination. Wits was established =
in 1896.
Today, the University of the Witwatersrand has 9 faculties, namely =
Architecture, Arts, Commerce, Education, Engineering, Law, Management, =
Health Sciences and Science. Wits employs nearly 4 000 members of staff, =
of which approximately 1 250 are academic staff, educating nearly 19 000 =
students. Currently, Wits confers approximately 4 500 degrees each year. =
