Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai yesterday called for an international
war on drug abuse, urging increased cooperation among affected
 nations.

Mr Chuan made the call at the opening of a conference on exploring
fresh ways to combat drug and substance abuse, attended by
delegates from more than 20 countries, AFP reported.

"The drug problem is not an isolated thing, it respects no boundaries
geographical or political, rich or poor, developed or developing," Mr
Chuan said in his opening speech.

"Only by cooperating with each other can we hope to eradicate, once
and for all, drug and substance abuse with a view to creating a
drug-free world for our children," he added.

Mr Chuan said drug abuse was one of the major problems facing the
international community, undermining economic and social well-being,
 as well as national security.

He said the "New Dimensions on the Prevention of Drug and
Substance Abuse" conference would provide non-government
organisations with an opportunity to exchange views, experiences and
 ideas.

Delegates will review ways of reducing drug demand with an emphasis
on effective prevention strategies and plan to issue a plan of action at
the close of the conference on Friday.

The conference is the 17th of its kind organised by the International
Federation of Non-Government Organisations (IFNGO). It was held
 in Indonesia in 1996.

IFNGO chairman Justice Amnuay Intuputi said earlier Thailand faced
a serious threat from drugs, particularly amphetamines flooding the
country from illicit labs in neighbouring countries.
