SSA COUNTER-ACCUSES SPDC OF PROTECTING REFINERIES

S.H.A.N., 10 November 1998

The junta commanders themselves are involved in producing drugs according
to Shan States Army?s Eastern Sector Commander, Major Kham Famuang.

This was in retaliation to junta claim on 6 November that they had seized
a drug refinery under Shan resistance protection 2 km north of the Thai
border from Maesai, Chiangrai Province. Interviewed by TV Channel 7
(Thailand), Maj. Khin Maung Myint, Deputy Commander of LIB 316, was unable
to produce anything to substantiate his claim.

According to the Shan Commander, the camp was set up to train some radio
operators. It was set up at the wrong place i.e. on a slope instead of at
the foothill where there usually is a stream which is ideal for drug
production. During the brief fight, the Shan fighters, (12 of them) managed
to extricate themselves after killing two attackers and wounding some of
them. They however lost 1 Icom radio transceiver and 1 M16 automatic rifle.

"We don't have any refineries, "said Kham Famuang." We are against
setting them up. If one wants to know where they are, just look for areas
under junta control. For instance, in Pu Na Ko village, Mongtoom Ward in
Mongsart Township. It is under the protection of Battalion 330 from Mong
Pyak. There is also another under its wings in PaKae, across the Thai
border from Hua Maekham in Chiangrai Province."

It is suspected that the junta is trying to gain recognition from its
neighbors who are not impressed by its anti-narcotics efforts.
