 Rangoon has given the green light to Thailand to experiment a new
 travel route linking Mae Sot with Rangoon, via Moulmein. 

 The test-run trip originating from the province is expected at the end of
 this month.

 After four years waiting for Burma's permission to use the route, Tak
 chamber of commerce representatives have flown to Rangoon to
 discuss the travel plans for the first trip with tourist service officials.

 But it is not clear when the route will be opened up to tourists.

 Udon Tantisunthorn, the chamber adviser, reportedly received
 permission to try out the route from U Tun Myint, the first secretary of
 the Burmese ambassador to Thailand, on November 6.

 Mr Udon, the former deputy interior minister, proposed to Rangoon
 that it grant access in order to serve commercial and tourism purposes
 four years ago when the Thai-Burmese Friendship Bridge was being
 built.

 Rangoon, however, refused, citing poor road conditions and the
 security threat from the Karen National Union, the anti-Rangoon rebel
