UN condemns Burmese authorities

A United Nations committee has criticised the military authorities in Burma
for what it called the continued abuse of human rights in the country.

A resolution passed by the Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee
referred in particular to cases of arbitrary execution, rape and torture
highlighted in a recent UN report.

The resolution called on the Burmese authorities to act to restore
democracy, and start talks with the opposition National League for
Democracy.

Burma has condemned the resolution, saying the allegations arewithout
substance.
