What Thay Were Saying

An International Conference to Celebrate the 50 th Annivesary of the
United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
A Blueprint for Peace, Justice and Freedom
November 26 - 28, 1998
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

* WHAT THEY WERE SAYING *
========================

A captive voice from halfway around the world soared through the
conference
centre Friday night, as Burma's elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi's
detention by a
military regime made it impossible for her to attend. Images of Suu Kyi
filled giant
screens as a message smuggled out of Burma was read by her onetime
physician.

The conference's themes of peace, justice and freedom support " our
demand for
basic human rights," the winner of the 1991 Nobel Prize for Peace said
in her
letter.

"Peace should be more than an absence of war,." it should be a positive
force
that counters violence as a means of resolving the problems of human
society.
Freedom should be more than a lack of shackles."
