(1)		Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Thingangyun) Project, Maha Bandoola Bridge Project  in
Highgear

		Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Thingangyun), spanning Ngamoeyeik Creek, links
Thingangyun Township and Dagon Myothit (South) Township The main bridge is 700
feet long. The approach roads on the banks of Thingangyun Township and Dagon
Myothit (South) Township are 1,400 feet and 1,500 feet long respectively. The
bridge has a 72-foot-wide six-lane motorway and two six-foot-wide pedestrian
lanes. The reinforced bridge can bear 60-ton loads. Maha Bandoola Bridge,
spanning Pazundaung Creek, links Pazundaung and Dawbon Townships. The main
bridge is 787 feet long and the total length of approach structures is 2,856
feet long. The bridge has a six-lane 72-foot-wide motorway and two 6-foot-wide
pedestrian lanes. The bridge is a suspension bridge and can support 60-ton
loads.

(2)		Product Introduction and Application Seminar of Briggs & Stratton Corp

		Product Introduction and Application Seminar of Briggs & Stratton
Corporation sponsored by Tong Tah Co ltd (Myanmar) was held at Hotel
Equatorial on 13 December. Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and President of Tong
Tah Co Ltd Mr. Peter Loh made speeches. Next, Regional Director for Asia of
B&S Corp Mr. Jim Crunkhorn explained about the products. The guests observed
various kinds of engines, generators, pumps and other equipment and spare
parts.

(3)		MIC Secretary Leaves for Singapore

		Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission left Yangon on 13 December to
attend advanced roundtable on effect of foreign investment and poverty
eradication to be held in Singapore on 14 and 15 December.

(4)		Myanmar Women Weightlifters Win 3 Silver, 2 Bronze

		Aye Aye Aung of Myanmar stood second in Women's 75-kilo-and-above
Weightlifting Contest of the XIII Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, on 13
December. The People's Republic of China team was first with 270 kilos, Aye
Aye Aung of Myanmar second with 252.5 kilos and China (Taipei) third with
242.5 kilos in the contest. After the contest, Myanmar women's weightlifting
team bagged three silver and two bronze.

(5)		Office of Strategic Studies Donates Car for All-round Development Centre
for the Children

		The Office of  Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence donated a Nissan
Atlas car for the All-round Development Centre for the Children opened by
Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) in the meeting hall
of MMCWA in South Okkalapa Township on 13 December. Deputy Chief of the Office
of Strategic Studies Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence handed
over documents related to the car to Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA.

(6)		Yangon Institute of Education Holds 31st Convocation 

		Yangon Institute of Education held its 31st convocation at Yangon University
Convocation Hall on 13 December. Rector conferred degrees on seven MEd, 726
BEd and 236 in absentia.

(7)		Bodh Gaya Pilgrims Leave for Calcutta

		Pilgrims of Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Tour No 11/98 arranged by Bodh Gaya
Pilgrimage Organizing Supervisory Leading Committee under the Ministry of
Religious Affairs left for Calcutta by air on 13 December.

(8)		Volunteer Staff and Crew of mv Doulos Perform International Cultural
Programme

		Volunteer staff and crew of mv Doulos, the floating book exhibition,
performed an international cultural programme at the National Theatre on
Myomakyaung Road on 12 December. First, families of Myanma Tourism Services
presented a programme of Myanmar dances. Then, the international cultural
programme was presented by voluntary staff and crew of mv Doulos. On the
occasion, Project Director of mv Doulos Mr. Peter Conlen extended the
greetings to the audience.

(9)		Rector Sayadaw (Abbot) of ITBMU Leaves for US to Carry out Missionary
Work

		Rector Sayadaw of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University
under the Ministry of Religious Affairs Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Silananda
Bhivamsa left for the US by air on 13 December to carry out missionary work in
the US, Mexico, Malaysia and Singapore.

Arrival Statement of His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the
State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar
to Attend the Sixth ASEAN Summit in Hanoi

		At the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Phan Van Khai, Prime Minister of the
Socialist Republic of Vietnam, His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe,
Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the
Union of Myanmar arrived in Hanoi on 14  December 1998 to attend the Sixth
ASEAN Summit and Meetings of the ASEAN Heads of State / Government and Heads
of State / Government of the People's Republic of China, Japan and the
Republic of Korea scheduled to be held in Hanoi from 15 to 16 December, 1998.

		Myanmar became a full member of ASEAN in July 1997 and this is the first
time that it is participating in a formal ASEAN Summit. Today, ASEAN faces a
number of daunting challenges but Myanmar is confident that with the unity and
solidarity of its members, ASEAN will surely be able to overcome them. During
the Summit, Myanmar will work together with other members of ASEAN to develop
a blue print for the successful implementation of the noble goals and tasks
set out in the ASEAN Vision 2020.

		Myanmar takes satisfaction that the summit will also provide the opportunity
for ASEAN nations to discuss regional and other issues of mutual interest with
the leaders of China, Japan and Korea. The strengthening of relations with
these major dialogue partners from East Asia will be of mutual benefit for all
concerned.
		While in Hanoi, His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the
State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar
looks forward to have cordial and meaningful deliberations with other ASEAN
nations as well as with leaders from China, Japan and Republic of Korea.
