Press Release/Press Alert 18 Jan 1999

Burmese pro-democracy activists in Tokyo will stage a stand-in protest =
in front of the Shin Takanawa Prince Hotel in Shinagawa, Tokyo at 7:30 =
a.m in the early morning of January 20, Wednesday. This peaceful protest =
will be to express their condemnation of the invitation of the Foreign =
Ministry of the Japanese Government to a Burma military intelligence =
official Brig. Gen. Kyaw Win who is to arrive in Tokyo and stay at the =
hotel on Jan.20 for a 10-day stay.

Meanwhile, Burmese pro-democracy activists in Tokyo sent today a letter =
to the Juctice Minister, Mr. Shozaburo Nakamura, in which they humbly =
request to the Japanese Government to put a ban on the issuing of visas =
to the Burma=92s military government officials.

In Burma the whole people face a life rapidly deteriorating under the =
military dictatorship that had impoverished Burma intellectually, =
politically, morally and economically. Since September 1998, most of the =
NLD parliamentarians-elect, members of organising committees from the =
States, Divisions, Townships, Wards, villages and other ordinary members =
have been illegally arrested and imprisoned by the military intelligence =
units. In fact they are being held and pressured by means of criminal =
intimidation and unlawful methods employed by the Military Intelligence =
Services to resign from the positions they hold and to cause the =
dissolution of the township branches of the National League for =
Democracy. The New Light of Myanmar newspaper, military government-owned =
media recently said that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese Pro-democracy =
leader and Nobel Peace Laureate is warned that action can be taken =
against her anytime with sufficient evidence according to law.

Burmese pro-democracy activists in Tokyo strongly protest against =
Burmese military junta=92s oppression of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, =
parliamentarians-elect and members of the NLD.Members of the media are =
encouraged to come to the spontaneous protest. For more information =
