YANGON (Jan. 28) XINHUA - A Myanmar military goodwill
delegation's recent nine-day visit to Japan was fruitful, a
            government statement said Thursday.

At the invitation of the Japanese government, the Myanmar
delegation, led by Brig.-Gen. Kyaw Win, Deputy Chief of the
Office of Strategic Studies (OSS) of the Ministry of
Defense,
            visited Japan on January 20-28.

Quoting a statement from Kyaw Win, an official Information
sheet said: "The visit was fruitful and has enhanced
friendship and better understanding between the two
            countries."

No further details about the visit were disclosed. Last
Thursday, Myanmar's "Committee Representing the People's
Parliament Elected in the 1990 Multi-Party General
Election,"
formed by the then winning opposition National League for
Democracy (NLD) in the election, submitted notes to the
Japanese Parliament through the Japanese embassy here,
protesting against Japan's reception of the delegation as
            "state guest."

Japan was once the biggest donor to Myanmar. After
suspending aid to Myanmar in late 1988, Japan resumed
part of its assistance in 1992 by providing grants-in-aid
for
debt relief and other forms of aid to the country.

According to official statistics, Japan's investment in
Myanmar reached 223.56 million U.S. dollars in 20 projects
at the end of October 1998, ranking the ninth among 23
countries or regions which have a total of 7.089 billion
dollars of investment in the country.
