                                                 Information Sheet
                              N0.A-0781 (I)                   29th January

(1) Honours Accorded to Athletes Who Won Medals in Far East and South Pacific
Games 			for Disabled
		A ceremony to honour athletes who won medals at VII Far East and South
Pacific Games for the Disabled in Bangkok was held at Thuwunna National Indoor
Stadium-1 in Thingangyun Township on 28 January. Chairman of Myanmar National
Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt addressed the ceremony and presented awards to the victorious
athletes. In his address, the Secretary-1 said, the Government, recognizing
good qualities and capabilities of those who lost their limbs and regarding
them as a national force, is encouraging them to be able to actively
participate in the works of benefit to the State, and therefore, the forces,
disabled but capable, which can serve the interests of the State, are emerging
in education, health and social sectors as well as in sports sector.
		It is evident now that disabled athletes of Myanmar can bring honour to the
nation by winning medals at the games of international standard. The VII Far
East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled was held in Bangkok in January
1999, and 2,430 athletes from 34 nations took part in 15 events. Altogether 29
disabled athletes from Myanmar participated in swimming, judo and volleyball
tournaments and four events of tracks and fields; a total of 41 medals
including seven gold medals, 16 silver medals and 18 bronze medals were won;
and out of 34 nations, Myanmar stood tenth. Disabled athletes from Myanmar
took part in these games six times, and won a total of 42 gold medals, 51
silver medals and 47 bronze medals. While efforts are being made to win
victories in international sports meets and to uplift the prestige and
integrity of the State, it is found that the disabled athletes of Myanmar
could improve the image of the State. The victorious athletes were worthy
soldiers who discharged national defence duties once, sacrificing their limbs;
and they continue to discharge national duties in the sports sector with a
view to improving the image of the State. The State Peace and Development
Council is making arrangements to enable disabled citizens to strive for

making their capabilities efficient, to get favourable conditions and to
establish their social and family life and to actively participate in efforts
for national development.
