(1)		Briquette Factories of Ministry of Forestry Open

		A ceremony to open the briquette factory of the Ministry of Forestry was
held at the factory in the compound of the Forest Department on 31 January.
The Secretary-2 formally unveiled the signboard of the briquette factory.  In
his address, the Secretary-2 said  that the year 1995 was designated as
firewood substitute fuel year with a view to making the central  region lush
and green and preserving forests and trees, and efforts were to be made to
carry out the tasks as a national duty.  In Myanmar, firewood and charcoal are
mainly used as fuel, and it  can be estimated that over 24 million cubic tons
of firewood is being used annually as fuel; therefore, production of
briquettes is a must, and only when  other kinds of fuel can be used
extensively instead of firewood, can the forests be preserved all the more.
The opening ceremony of Briquette Factory No 002 was also held  in the
compound of the wood-based industries in Dagon Myothit (South).
(2)		Wang Ter-Chang Wins London-Myanmar Open Golf Tourney

		London-Myanmar Open Golf tournament continued for the final day at Yangon
City Golf Resort on 31 January. Wang Ter-Chang of Chinese Taipei won first and
Koichi Nogami of Japan and  Frankie Minoza of the Philippines second.
President of Myanmar Golf Federation presented prizes to winners.  Wang Ter-
Chang got US$ 32,300 and Koichi Nogami and Frankie Minoza got US$  17,330
each. Kyi Hla Han of Myanmar placed ten and received US$ 3,835.

(3)		Vice-Mayor Leaves For PRC

		Myanmar delegation led by Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee
Vice-Mayor  left Yangon by air on 31 January for People's Republic of China.

(4)		Myanmar Attends ARF Workshop Disaster Management in Bangkok

		Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand,  Director of Relief & Resettlement and
Counsellor of Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok attended ARF Workshop  Disaster
Management held from 25 to 28  January and Meeting of ARF Expert Group on
Disaster Relief held on 29 January in Bangkok.  The delegates of ARF member
nations discussed conducting  more effective rescue operations and they agreed
ten-point programme on raising awareness on disaster prevention and relief
between the government and the people,  disaster  preparedness, conducting  of

course on relief  work, exchange of experience among ARF countries,
establishment of communication centres, accessing internet, disaster
preparedness, cooperation in disaster, preparedness, cooperation with
international organizations and nations, standardization of terminology and
data  bases and promotion of cooperation. The agreement will be submitted for
approval to the third  ARF Inter-sessional meeting on Disaster Relief to be
held in Moscow in April 1999.  The meeting accepted the Philippines' proposal
to hold a meeting on storm warning to be held in Manila this year and the US
financial assistance to hold a meeting on disaster warning, relief and media
to be held in September and October.

(5)		94th Convocation of YU Continues

		The 94th Convocation of Yangon University continued  at the Convocation Hall
of YU for the second day on 31 January. In the morning section, Rector
conferred Master and Bachelor degrees on 759 graduates and in the afternoon
section, the rector conferred. Master, Bachelor and Diploma degrees on 834
graduates.
