POSITION STATEMENT ON EU DECISION TO ACCEPT SPDC'S MINISTER

NLD (LA) Australia strongly urges the European Union to reconsider its
decision to allow the attendance of Burma at the Asian-EU Ministerial
meeting. The following ground reasons should be put into reconsideration.

1. Since NLD has formed its committee representing the people's parliament,
the military regime in Burma stepped up its repression on NLD's elected
MPs and members. The party offices were forcefully closed down nationwide.
More than 1000 NLD members were arrested.

2. The military junta meted out harsh and long-term imprisonment to more
than 200 Burmese students (one was sentenced to 54 years in prison) within
the past two weeks in Burma because these students supported NLD's call to
convene parliament. Other sentences ranged mostly from seven to 14 years.

3. The regime's violation of human rights and democratic principles had
already been on record and condemned by the United Nations General Assembly
and international Labour Organisation.

4. The NLD, winning party of the 1990 general election, has called for
reconciliation and dialogue to solve the national problems but it has been
still ignored by the military junta which also failed to undertake the
democratisation of the nation as promised by itself.

By allowing its attendance at the Asian-EU meeting, it means that EU is
co-operating with the legitimisation of the military regime. So NLD (LA)
Australia wants EU to hold on its previously practised tougher stand
towards the non-committal regime.
