NOTE: More mis-representation by Burma's SLORC/ SPDC.  How many of these
schools are military schools?  How many so-called upgrades were
replacing teachers they didn't like and/or controlling teachers from
teaching freedom of thought.

               YANGON (Feb. 6) XINHUA - More than 5,000 new
               primary, middle and high schools have been opened
               in Myanmar since the military government took over
               the power of state on September 18, 1988, said Lt.
               Gen. Khin Nyunt, first secretary of the Myanmar
               State Peace and Development Council. 

               Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt, who is also chairman of the
               Myanmar Education Committee, told the opening
               ceremony of the Special Refresher Course for
               Basic Education Teachers here Friday that from
               1988 to 1998, the number of primary schools rose
               from 31,329 to 35,833, middle schools from 1,696
               to 2,115 and high schools from 722 to 936. 

               Among the new schools, 4,504 new primary schools
               were opened, 419 primary schools were upgraded
               to the middle school level and 214 middle schools to
               the high school level, he said. 

               There were 68 universities and colleges in the
               whole country at the end of 1998 compared with 32
               in 1988, he said. 

               According to official statistics, a total of 62,913.74
               million kyats (209.7 million U.S. dollars) has been
               used for education from 1988-89 to 1998-99.
