Unrisky gamble

Burma opened a new terminal for Kawthong Airport, to serve the Thai-owned
casino resort near Ranong, in the Burmese south. Vikrom Aisiri, chairman of
the
Andaman Club Company, was part of the ceremony.

His company Andaman Club opened a gambling casino on an island near Victoria
Point, Taninthayi Division, in southern Burma, four years ago. It caters to
Thai and other Asian clientele. Until now, it has been reached by boat from
Ranong. The new airport can handle jets as large as a chartered Boeing 737
filled with gamblers.

US drops out

America announced will boycott the Interpol conference on heroin trafficking
which opens in Rangoon in nine days. Most European nations also will boycott
the fourth Interpol conference on heroin trafficking, to protest Burmese
cooperation with drug warlords, as well as the nation's human rights
violations. The US decision effectively marginalises the Interpol meeting,
which will be attended by Thai and Chinese delegations among others.
