A United Nations (UN) investigator says forced labour, beatings, torture
and confiscation of land are all widespread in Burma, and the human rights
situation is worsening.

In a report to the UN Human Rights Commission, Rajsoomer Lallah also says
Burma's military Government needs to turn to the international community if
it is to prevent what he calls a humanitarian disaster.

Burma's military Government usually responds to international criticism of
its human rights record by rejecting such allegations as an attempt to
interfere in its internal affairs.
