Myanmar Gems Emporium Fetches Over 6 Million Dollars
Xinhua
21-MAR-99
YANGON (March 22) XINHUA - A total of 6.3 million
U.S. dollars worth of locally produced gems, jade,
pearl and jewelry were sold through tender system
and competitive bidding at the 36th annual Myanmar
Gems Emporium which ended here Sunday night.
The sum was two times more than that of the 35th
event held in March last year.
The six-day state-sponsored emporium, which
began last Tuesday, attracted over 500 gems
merchants from 17 countries and regions, mostly
from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region, Thailand, Japan and Singapore.
The emporium also drew 136 gems traders from 69
local companies.
Myanmar, a well-known producer of jade, ruby and
sapphire in the world, has held gems emporiums
annually since 1964 with additional mid-year ones
introduced since 1992.
The country earned a total of 271.3 million dollars
from the last 36 annual and seven mid-year gems
emporiums.
