Burma's state-controlled press has accused foreign governments of
conspiring with Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to exploit the terminal
illness of her husband.

The New Light of Burma daily newspaper says the application by Michael Aris
to visit his wife in Rangoon is a political ploy to discredit the Burmese
Government.

Michael Aris is terminally ill with cancer and has applied for a visa to
visit Aung San Suu Kyi to say goodbye.

Burmese authorities have so far failed to act on the visa request, repeating
demands that Aung San Suu Kyi leave Burma to visit her husband.

Aung San Suu Kyi is locked in a bitter political struggle with the
government and fears she will be barred from returning home if she leaves
the country.

Australia, the United States and Britain have called on Rangoon to show
compassion and grant Mr Aris a visa.
