Well-being San Myaing

Letter to Minister U Ohn Han

Alkmaar, the Netherlands, 22 April 1999

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you concerning San Myaing, a student currently believed to
be detained in Myingyan prison.

San Myaing was arrested along with many other students in December 1991,
while peacefully demonstrating on behalf of political prisoners. At a
military tribunal in July 1992, he was, along with other students,
sentenced to ten years imprisonment. At the time he was being held in
custody in Insein prison.

I am one of many concerned people around the world seeking further
information about San Myaing, his health, his well-being. Our greatest
worry is that conditions in your prisons in Myanmar, according to many
reports, are seriously inadequate regarding medical and sanitary
facilities. Also, and equally important, the very basic human and legal
rights are being denied and violated. Thus, I write to you, respectfully
asking your personal office to locate San Myaing, and assure us of his good
health and well-being, and to order his immediate and unconditional
release. This act of justice and compassion would receive the wholehearted
applause of the international community, and would set a most welcome and
optimistic precedent for a future democratic Myanmar.

I look forward to hearing of a succesful resolution to this important issue.

Respectfully yours,

Ian Stevenson
