EU sanctions

004 - (EU) EU/BURMA: EU extends sanctions for six months
Luxembourg, 27/04/1999 (Agence Europe) - The General Affairs Council on 26
April decided to extend for six months the sanctions it has been applying
against Burma since October 1996 (expulsion of military personnel from
embassies, arms embargo, suspension of humanitarian aid, ban on visits by
high-ranking officials and on visas for political and military officials).
These sanctions had been reinforced in October 1998 (with a ban on
transit visas).
In its conclusions, the Council "expressed its deep concern at the
continuing human rights violations and the increased repression of the
democratic opposition in Burma/Myanmar. It renewed the Common Position on
Burma/Myanmar, which imposes restrictive measures, for a further six months
(until 29 October 1999). The Council called once more on the Government of
Burma/Myanmar to take early and concrete steps towards democracy, respect
for human rights and national reconciliation. The Council expressed its
strong wish to initiate a meaningful political dialogue with Burma/Myanmar
as soon as possible. The Council will consider further restrictive measures
in the light of the worsening of the human rights situation in
Burma/Myanmar."
