SPDC lorced labor in road constructions

TACHILEIK (Burma), May 4 -- People all over the world are very well =
aware of forced labor in Burma today.=20

It is reported that early in 1996, Gen. Khin Nyunt ordered local =
commanders in the eastern Shan State to re-contruct the road from Ta Kaw =
via Kengtung to Tachileik within two years with concrete pavement so =
that it will be usable throughout the year.
=20
But the road is still under construction today and the locals are being =
forced to work on it without any payment. The people must contribute =
certain amount of broken stones (100 cubic feet) to authorities =
concerned and those who cannot contribute must pay 1,600 kyats. The =
price of the 100-cubic-feet broken stones is rising gradually from =
K1,600 to K2,000, then K3,000 and now it is more than K3,500 because of =
corrupt officers. It is reported that the officers are re-selling the =
stones about three times to the locals. Soldiers on security duty steal =
the stones with trucks at night in accordance with the officers' =
instruction.

Many local people are still working in this road construction. They =
have not much chance to work on their own fields. Or many of them are =
still paying much-higher prices for stones. Nowadays, it is reported =
that many young soldiers are forced to work in road constructions and =
many of them are defecting nearly every day because of hardship and =
brutality of their officers. =20
