PUBLIC MEETING ON 9TH ANNIVERSARY OF 1990 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN BURMA

On 29.5.99, a public meeting in commemoration of 9th anniversary of 1990
General Elections in Burma will be held at the LHMU Auditorium, 187 Thomas
Street, Haymarket in Sydney. The meeting will start at 10.00 a.m.

The Multi-party General Elections was held on 27th May 1990 in Burma after
28 years under the military rule. The NLD led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi won a
landslide victory gaining 82% of total seats in the elections but the
Burmese military junta until today has refused to honour the election
result. After years of oppressive intimidation and persecutions, the NLD
constituted the Committee Representing People's Parliament (CRPP) in
September 1998 which has been supported and recognised by the Parliaments of
Belgium, Norway, Denmark, and the EU.

U Tin Tut, elected MP, said, " It has been 9 years that the military junta
has failed to honour the result of 1990 election and imposed the worst
repression on the people of Burma than ever before in their brutal history.
The repression has worsened greatly since May 1998 when the NLD called for
the parliament elected in 1990 to be convened. On 23rd April 1999, the 55th
session of United Nations Commission on Human Rights adopted by con census a
tough resolution which deplored the continuing violations of human rights in
Burma. The commission strongly urged the dictatorship to take urgent and
meaningful measures to ensure the establishment of democracy in accordance
with the will of the people as expressed in the 1990 general election and
noted that the NLD has established a committee to represent members of
parliament elected in 1990. It is clear that with the diplomatic backing of
massive international body, governments of the world are prepared to support
the NLD."

All the democracy loving people and supporters of the Burma cause are
welcome to the meeting. The keynote speakers will be U Tin Tut, elected
member of Parliament (Ein Me Constituency) and U Daniel Aung, elected Member
of Parliament (Moung Ping Constituency) and they will talk about the

Committee representing People's Parliament. All are warmly welcome to
participate in the discussion program.
