Forced Labor in Burma Called Widespread (Washingtonpost)

GENEVA -- Forced labor in Burma remains widespread despite
government denials, the International Labor Organization
said.

In a report issued in Geneva, the U.N. agency said that
thousands of
villagers continued to perform forced labor as porters,
messengers or
workers on roads, railways, bridges and farms.

An agency commission, which interviewed more than 250
witnesses in
neighboring countries in August, had called on the
government at the time to
stop forced labor and called for penalties for violators.
