Picket line at annual shareholder meeting IHC Caland

Amsterdam, June 1st 1999 - (The Dutch company) IHC Caland should
immediately cease its operations in Burma. No decent company should invest
here, because of the massive human-rights violations by the dictators and
the repression of the elected members of parliament. This opionion the BCN
shares with among others the Dutch government, the European Parliament,
(Dutch) trade unions and many civil organisations.

The project in which IHC Caland is co-operating, the exploration of the
Yetagun gas field, is of vital importance to the military junta of Burma.
The profits from the sale of the gas will for the larger part be used to
strengthen the position of the military.

CEO J.D. BAx of IHC Caland acknowledges his money "ends up in the pockets
of the military". This regime, he says, "does not belong in this day and
age". In spite of this, IHC Caland up till today continues its investment,
worth up to four hundred million guilders (200 million US$).

The Burma Centre Netherlands, Searchweb and XminusY Solidarityfund will
repeat their appeal to IHC Caland to disinvest on June 4th, on the occasion
of the annual shareholder meeting. The three organise a picket line around
the Hilton Hotel in Rotterdam, where the meeting takes place. Shareholder
are showed of what they are shareholders: forced labour.

During the shareholder meeeting two Burmese representatioves will be
present: they will weigh the desastrous effects of the repression in Burma
against the profits of IHC. Also an American lawyer in involved in the
US-court case against Unocal will ask questions to the company. Unocal is
charged for human rights violations committed by its Burmese joint-venture
partner, the Burmese army. This complaint has been admitted by a US-court,
the first time an American company can possibly be held liable for human
rights violations not on US-soil.

Amsterdam 1 juni 1999  IHC Caland moet ogenblikkelijk stoppen met haar
investering in Burma. Een fatsoenlijk bedrijf investeert niet in Burma;
vanwege de massale mensenrechten-schendingen door de dictators en de
onderdrukking van de wettig gekozen parlementaire meerderheid. Deze mening
deelt het BCN met onder meer de Nederlandse regering, het Europees
parlement, vakbonden en vele maatschappelijke organisaties. 

Het project waaraan IHC Caland meewerkt, de exploitatie van het Yetagun
aardgasveld, is van levensbelang voor de militaire junta van Burma. De
aardgasinkomsten worden voor het grootste deel gebruikt ter versterking van
de positie van de militairen.

IHC Caland directeur J.D. Bax erkent dat zijn geld ?bij de kolonels
terecht? komt. Over het regiem zegt hij: ?Dat hoort niet thuis in deze
tijd.? Desondanks gaat IHC Caland door met haar miljoenenorder. 

Het Burma Centrum Nederland, Searchweb en XminY Solidariteitsfonds herhalen
op 4 juni hun oproep aan IHC Caland om haar verantwoordelijkheid te nemen
en te stoppen in Burma. De drie organiseren rond de
aandeelhoudersvergadering van IHC Caland een kleine picket line; de
aandeelhouders wordt getoond waarvan ze aandeelhouder zijn: repressie in
Burma.

Tijdens de aandeelhoudersvergadering zullen twee Burmezen aanwezig zijn;
zij zetten de desastreuze gevolgen van de repressie in Burma af tegen de
winst van IHC. Tevens zal een Amerikaanse jurist die in de VS betrokken is
bij het proces tegen het oliebedrijf Unocal vragen stellen. Unocal wordt
aangeklaagd voor de mensenrechtenschendingen gepleegd door het Burmese
leger -- Unocal?s joint-venture partner. Deze aanklacht is inmiddels
ontvankelijk verklaard.
