Eight-point plan to curb crime against women and children

Cabinet approval to be sought Tuesday

Temsak Traisopon

The Prime Minister's Office plans to ask the cabinet on Tuesday to approve an
eight-point proposal aimed at curbing violence against children and women.

The proposal is in accordance with a call from a committee dealing with
violence against women.
The committee comprises representatives from several agencies including the
Foundation for Women, the Friends of Women Foundation and the Association for
the Promotion of the Status of Women.
In addition, the ministry plans to ask the cabinet to declare November the
month for campaigning against all forms of violence and abuse of women and
children.

The eight measures are as follows:

_ Set up a trauma centre in every state hospital's emergency department to
provide both physical and mental treatment.

-Improve investigation and interrogation methods and other related procedures
to protect the victims and encourage them to report crimes and violence.

-Provide shelter and, if necessary, financial assistance to those who cannot
help themselves.

-Provide around-the-clock patrol and step up security in deserted and isolated
areas.

-Set up a hotline service around-the-clock free of charge.

-Recruit volunteers to guard against crime and violence in their own
communities.

-Suppress all forms of pornography.

-Give appropriate sex education to and promote human rights awareness among
children in both formal and non-formal systems at all levels.
