New office to fight illegal entry is due

A new regional office to co-ordinate action against organised illegal
migration
could be operating in Bang kok by the end of the year.

Brunson Mckinley, director-general of the Geneva-based International
Organisation for Migration, said the centre would provide training facilities
and collect data on illegal migration.

Charivat Santaputra, deputy director-general of the Foreign Minis try's
international organisation depart ment, said the centre would help pro vide
independent and accurate information on migration.
Thailand has a reputation as a safe route for people trafficking in drugs and
illegal migrants and a long- standing problem with illegal job seekers,
especially Burmese.

Arrangements were being made for funding. Representatives of 18 coun tries in
the Asia-Pacific region made commitments to open the new centre at a
meeting in
Bangkok in April.
