Seminar on leprosy education held

Seminar on leprosy education held

YANGON, 30 June-The Ministry of Health and Myanmar Maternal
and Child Welfare Association co-sponsored a seminar on
leprosy education at MMCWA Headquarters this afternoon.

Prior to the seminar, ultrasound equipment provided by
Grassroots Grant Assistance of Japan were distributed to
Township Maternal and Child Welfare Associations.

Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe explained plans to distribute
ultrasound equipment to township associations to conduct
maternal and child health care work with the assistance of
the Ministry of Health.

She then presented the machines to associations in Yangon,
Mandalay, Pyapon, Maubin, Kengtung, Tachilek, Kalay, Myeik,
Kawthoung, Haka and Myitkyina.

Later, the seminar began with the opening address
delivered by Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

The minister said efforts are under way to wipe out
leprosy disease from the nation by the year 2000. The
ministry will strive to reduce the number of leprosy
infected persons to one per every 10,000 to remove leprosy
from the public health problems.

There are now only over 10,000 leprosy patients in
Myanmar down from over 200,000 in 1987. The ministry is
exposing and giving treatment from 6,000 to 10,000 leprosy
patients per year. MMCWA should take part in controlling
the disease, he said.

The seminar continued then.
