Subject: The Army Truck Crashed at the Villagers

The Army Truck Crashed at the Villagers
May 24, 1999

On May 24 an army car transporting the Light Infantry Battalion (401) of the
Burmese Army crashed at high speed into a trolley car waiting by the road near
Pyaung-bote-taung village, killing one man and seriously injuring five other
passengers.
According to the trolley driver, Ko Myint Thein, he had been travelling from
Kalein-aung village to Kan-pauk when he saw the army car approaching at a
dangerously high speed. Quickly he pulled the trolley to the side of the road
to avoid an accident, but the army car proceeded to crash into the trailer of
the trolley. The army car then continued on its journey from Kan-pauk to
Tavoy,
without stopping to assist the passengers of the trolley car.
The following day, May 25, trolley driver Ko Myint Thein was summoned to the
Kan-pauk police station and order to pay a compensation of 10,000 Kyats to the
family of the dead passenger, and 5,000 Kyats to each of the injured
passengers. The police instructed Ko Myint Thein not to file a criminal report
against the Burmese army, as it would have dangerous implications for him.
On May 29 the battalion commander of LIB (401) summoned to Ko Myint Thein and
suggested that the trolley car be hit because the driver had stopped on the
wrong side of the road. According to Ko Myint Thein, he admitted to the
officer
that he was wrong out of fear of the army. The LIB (401) officer then released
Ko Myint Thein, according to the sources.
