Blood Donation for Kargil
by the Burmese Refugee Community in India

7th July 1999

Seven July is one of the remarkable days in the history of Burma. On
this day of last 37 years, the people of Burma faced the beginning of
genocide, mass massacre, ruthless and indiscriminate killing of innocent
citizens by the military dictatorship that still exists in Burma.

After taking over power form the hands of democratically elected
government by staging military coup on 2nd March 1962, the then military
regime led by General Ne Win crushed the demonstrations of the students
that resisted his dictatorial regime.

On 7th July 1962, thousands of students form Rangoon University, who had
assembled in the historic Students' Union building to protest against
the military regime, were locked form outside and dynamited by the
Burmese army. The whole area with corpses and injured students lying all
over was rolled over by bulldozers. The military also took to
indiscriminate firing on the hundreds of students who were assembled
outside the Union Hall building. Many students were arrested and some
student leaders were ousted to an island and given life imprisonment.

The day, 7th July is later known as "the first destruction of democratic
structure by the military government" in Burma.

To pay tributes to the fallen students on that day and also to show
solidarity with India in the weak of Kargil conflict, Burmese Refugee
Community in India is organizing a blood donation camp at Burmese
Community Resource Center (BCRC) in New Delhi today. About 40 Burmese
refugee will be donating blood for those Indian soldiers who are injured
in the Kargil conflict.

By donating our blood for the injured Indian soldiers in the Kargil, we
Burmese Refugee Community in India wish to express our solidarity with
the government, the people and the soldiers of India who are sacrificing
their lives in Kargil to regain and protect India' territory.
