NEWS RELEASE- NLD supporter dies in Insein prison

Ko Hla Khin, aged 43, died in Insein Jail on May 31, 1999. According to
a SPDC government statement, he hanged himself with his sarong in his
cell because of neurological disorders linked to a treatment he
was undergoing for alcoholism. The NLD has called into question the
authorities' explanation concerning Ko Hla Khin's death.

According to recent reports, Ko Hla Khin was arrested in connection with
one of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's trips to the Irrawaddy Delta area in
August 1998. At that time, Suu Kyi and her colleagues were trying to
meet with and encourage NLD members and MPs who were under pressure by
the local PDC (Peace and Development Council) authorities. After Suu Kyi
and her colleagues were stopped on their way, near Anyarsu Village, Ko
Hla Khin, Ko Khin Gyaw and Naw Ohn Hla were asked by the NLD
headquarters to go and assist Suu Kyi and her group. On the way to the
area where Aung San Suu Kyi's's car was blocked, Ko Hla Khin, Ko Khin
Gyaw and Naw Ohn Hla were stopped and arrested by the MI. After 9 months
in jail, Ko Khin Gyaw was released while Ko Hla Khin and Naw Ohn Hla
remained in Insein jail.=20

Ko Hla Khin held several duties for the NLD. In 1995, after DASSK's
release, he was given the responsibility for the NLD-Youth in Shwepyitha
township, Rangoon division. Before DASSK was released, as it was
difficult to reorganise the NLD, Ko Hla Khin took responsibility for all
kinds of duties in his township. In 1997, Ko Hla Khin was a director and
assistant of U Tin Oo for 6 months. Ko Hla Khin also served as a cook
for all the members of the NLD who performed cleaning duties, security
duties etc., inside DASSK's compound. At the time of the International
Committee of the Red Cross' visit in Insein Prison during the first week
of May, Ko Hla Khin was detained in solitary confinement and had not yet
been sent to trial. The SPDC moved political prisoners to other prisons

and to the dog cells in order to isolate them before the ICRC visit.=20

A reliable source inside Burma said other prisoners near by cells heard
intolerable shouting and crying from Ko Hla Khin's cell during the half
an hour that preceded his death. But in the statement released by the
SPDC to the international media through the Internet, the authorities
refused any responsibility for his death. The SPDC did not inform Ko Hla
Khin's family about what had happened to him. They only heard about it
from foreign radio stations. The SPDC did not free Ko Hla Khin's body to
the family for the funeral, and did not agree to a medical post mortal.=20

The NLD headquarters and the NLD held a memorial service on the 7th day
of Ko Hla Khin's demise, on 6 June 1999, at the Thathana Gonyi building
at Chauk Htat Kyi Pagoda in Bahan township, Rangoon division. The
chairman of the NLD, U Aung Shwe, the vice-chairman, U Tin Oo, the
general-secretary, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as CEC members U Than
Htun and U Soe Myint attended the memorial and discussed with the monks
about the death of Ko Hla Khin. 300 people and 20 monks also attended
the ceremony.
