Stamp of approval for Burmese timber

Provincial authorities have voiced support for imports of logs from Burma.

Governor Samroeng Punyopakorn yesterday said the imports would halt illegal
logging in Thai forests.

He expressed confidence there would be no recurrence of the Salween logging
scandal involving sending Thai logs to Burma before being sent back to
Thailand with Burmese stamp.

Four Thai firms-Polpana, FA Pharmaceutical, B&F Goodrich and Thai-Korea
Veterans' Welfare-have sought permission from the Forestry Department to
import logs from Burma.

Mr Samroeng said he would call on the Interior Ministry to scrap the bidding
for wood seized from forests as it would encourage illegal logging.

A large number of illegally-felled trees are seized each month without any
arrest, he said.Meanwhile, Poolsak Sunthornpanitkit, chairman of the Mae
Hong Son chamber of commerce, also backs the the firms' bid to import logs,
saying it would help alleviate the shortage of wood in the province.

He was planning to call on Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai to set up a central
committee to consider wood imports, adding the panel could speed up imports,
which have been delayed for months.
