The Crucial Indo-Myanmar talks on issues connected with internal
security especially crossborder terrorism across the sensitive
North-Eastern borders of India commenced here this morning. The
discussions, the sixth of its kind held between the two countries in
recent years, are slated to be centred around many other bilateral
issues such as cooperation improvement in communication facilities and
trade ties.
Official sources said that notwithstanding India's stance over Myanmar's
pro-democracy movement, efforts were on to enter into a meaningful
dialogue with the Myanmar Government for greater trade through
land-routes connecting the two countries along the North-Eastern region
of the country.
The sources said that even as illegal trade in commodities had been
recent years, the two neighbouring countries were keen to legalise the
same so as to provide a fillip to the fast-growing bilateral economic
ties. " Drug trafficking and cross-border terrorism continue to be high
on the agenda given the nexus amongst some of the militant groups
operating from the common borders of the two countries particulary in
Manipur and Nagaland," sources said while indicating that enough
progress had already been made by way of intelligence sharing over these
iusses.
