New Delhi, July 30:
India will provide training to Burmese anti-narcotics officials to check
narcotics smuggling across the Indo-Burmese border. This was decided at
the end of three days of talks between the union home secretary Kamal
Pandey, and Burma's deputy home minister Brigadier General Thura Myint
Maung, here on Friday.
It identified ways of fosterning cooperation on issues like cross
border terrorim, sharing of intelligence on real time basis and setting
up of better communication links. It agreed to review the work relating
to the maintenance of the boundary pillars. The surveyors-general of the
two countries will meet shortly to work out an action plan in this
regard.
A group of Burmese pro-democracy activists staged a demonstration at
Jantar Mantar on Friday afternoon, shouting slogans against the military
junta in Burma. They were later joined by Samata Party activists in the
two hour-long demonstration. The All Burma Students League later issued
a statement urging the Indian government to ask the military regime in
Burma to start a dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi.
