Subject: Kyats two thousand per minute and E-mail connection to Burma

As of August 1, 1999 the telephone rates
for calling abroad from Burma changed
quite extensively. Calls from Burma to
USA costs four US dollars ($ 4.00) or
two thousand kyats per minute and there
is no time limit.  Before August 1. it
cost five hundred kyats per three
minutes. Two thousand kyats is twice the
gross salary of an experienced clark.
The immigration clerk who stamped the
exit visa when Ne Win went to Indonesia
earned one thousand dollars a month.

It is possible to send e-mail to and
from Burma. It costs three hundred Kyats
to receive an e-mail in Rangoon and
costs five US dollars to send one from
Rangoon.

I do not have the full information for
example I do not know the telephone
company.  Please excuse me if this is an
old information and some numbers are not
exactly correct. One told me it costs
four and a half dollars a minute to call
to America.
