(1) Commander-in-Chief (Air) Returns from Thailand 

    The Myanmar goodwill delegation led by Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen
Kyaw Than arrived back Yangon from Thailand on 4 August after visiting
Thailand at the invitation of Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Air
Force, Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan.

(2) Kachin State and Bago Division to Put Acres Under Monsoon Paddy

    Kachin State has put 261,325 acres under monsoon paddy up to 3 August.
Its monsoon paddy cultivation target is 382,914 acres. Another 53,996
acres of land will be put under monsoon paddy this year. It has
produced sufficient paddy for local consumption in 1998-99.
    Of 2,429,260 acres which are targeted to be put under monsoon paddy in
Bago division for 1999-2000, 2,100,472 acres or 86 percent have been
put under crops.

(3) Marine Engineering (On-Job) Training Course, Basic Work Proficiency
    Course End 

    Marine Engineering (On-job) Training Course No1/99 and Basic Work
Proficiency Course No 1/99 of the Inland Water Transport of the
Ministry of Transport concluded on 4 August in the meeting hall of
Dalla Shipyard. Trainees who had completed the Marine Engineering
(On-job) Training Course will be permitted to enter the MOT exam. 

(4) U Linn Myaing Appointed Ambassador to France

    The Chairman of the State Peace and Development 
Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Linn Myaing as
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to
the Republic of France.

(5) Seameo Regional Centre for Historical and Cultural Studies
Technical Committee Meets

    The opening ceremony of Technical Committee's Meeting of Seameo
Regional Centre for Historical and Cultural Studies to be established
in Myanmar was held at International Business Centre on 4 August .
Present on the occasion were Minister for Education Deputy Minister for
Education, Deputy Minister for Culture, directors-general, chairmen,
deputy directors-general, rectors, pro-rectors, principals and
representatives of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Executive
Director of Seameo Secretariat Dr. Suparak Rachaintra, Assistant
Secretary for Programmes, Projects and Regional Operations Dr. Fe A
Hidalgo and Deputy Minister for Education made an opening addresses.
Then, the representatives of ASEAN countries took part in the

discussions on Seameo Regional Centre for Historical and Cultural
Studies. The first day meeting ended in the evening.
(6) Minister for Cooperatives Meets Delegates to Myanmar Trade Fair' 99
Bangkok

    Minister for Cooperatives met delegates of cooperative societies and
companies who will participate in Myanmar Trade Fair '99 Bangkok to be
held in Bangkok, Thailand from 11 to 14 August. The Trade Fair was
jointly organized by Cooperatives Department and TTF (Yangon) Co Ltd
Nine cooperatives and 15 companies will put on display the products of
gem, rattan, electrical goods, furniture, gold and silver tapestry,
silk longyi, Thanakha and soft drinks. Altogether 143 delegates from
Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association, cooperatives societies and
companies will also attend the fair. 

(7) Seminar on Development of Industries of Industrial Zones Continues
    The seminar on development of industries of the industrial zones
sponsored by Myanma Industrial Development Committee (MIDC) continued
for the third day on 4 August at the Ministry of Industry-2. Present on
the occasion were deputy ministers, officials, representatives of 18
industrial zones, entrepreneurs and guests. In the morning session,
Director of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries of the Ministry of
Industry-2 and Director of Agricultural Mechanization Department of the
Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation gave talks on production of farm
machinery and Director of Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce
on import and export procedures. In the afternoon session,
Director-General of Directorate of Myanma Industrial Planning of the
Ministry of Industry-2 gave lectures of the fourth meeting of the ASEAN
small and medium enterprises agency, Director of Industrial Supervision
and Inspection Department of the Ministry of Industry-1 on ASEAN AICO,
Director of Cottage Industries Department of the Ministry of
Cooperatives on development of private industries and Director of No 3
Mining Enterprise of the Ministry of Mines on the government's
provision of assistance to the private industries. The seminar
continues on 5 August.
(8) Seminar on Infant-feeding and HIV Held
    Seminar on Infant-feeding and HIV jointly sponsored by Myanmar Medical
Association (Central) and UNICEF under the programme of Breast-feeding
Week was held at MMA Auditorium in Yangon on 4 August. President of MMA
and Chief of Health and Nutrition Section of UNICEF Dr. Christiane
Drocot d'Ans and made speeches. Dr Chawalit Natpratan of Case Study in
Northern Thailand submitted a paper on prevention of mother-to-child
transmission and its implication on infant feeding practices; Programme
Manager of National AIDS/STD Control Programme on feasibility and
issues in  piloting PMCT in Myanmar; Dr. Vilaiwan Gulgolkarn on caring
for infants and mother with HIV, comparing the past practice to the
present and Child Specialist of North Okkalapa General Hospital on
situation of breast-feeding practices and HIV in children in Myanmar.
(9) Myanmar Students Delegation Arrives Back from Japan

    Myanmar students delegation led by Supervisor Headmistress of Basic
Education Middle School No 5 in Loikaw, Kayah State, arrived back

Yangon by air from Japan on 4 August after attending the 11th
Get-together of students and Youths from Asia and the Pacific held in
Fukuoka, Japan, from 24 July to 3 August.
(10)    Network/Internet System Development Course Opened
    Network/Internet System Development Course sponsored by Myanmar
Computer Technicians Association and Centre of the International
Cooperation for Computerization (CICC) was opened at the office of MCTA
in the compound of Institute of Computer Science and Technology on 4
August.
(11)    Demonstration on Blood Collection Management System

    A demonstration on Blood Collection Management System jointly
organized by Terumo Co Ltd and Diethelm Co Ltd was held at the Hotel
Equatorial in Yangon on 4 August. Product Manager Ms. Yuri Takemoto of
Terumo Co Ltd explained about blood collection management system and
effects. Present were doctors from Defence Services General Hospital,
Yangon General Hospital, Mandalay Hospital, Yangon East Hospital,
Insein Hospital, Thingangyun Sanpya Hospital, Workers Hospital and
private hospitals.

(12)    Two Officials Leave for India

    Director (Administration)  of Information and Pulic Relations
Department and  Accountant (Grade I) of Myanmar Motion Picture
Enterprise Yangon for India by air on 4 July  morning to attend
Computer Application in Library and Information Services to be held in
Hyderabad with the sponsorship of Colombo Plan.

(13)    Technical Cooperation on Leprosy Control and Improved Basic Health
Services Project Coordinated

    The Health Department under the Ministry of Health and Japan
International Cooperation Agency coordinated Technical Co-operation on
Leprosy Control and Improved Basic Health Services Project and signed
minutes of discussion at the Sedona Hotel, Yangon on  4 July. Present 
on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Health and officials,
officials  of the  embassy of Japan and personnel of JICA.

(14)    MEcon  Exam Results  Out

    Yangon Institute of Economics has announced the results of MEcon Exam
held in March 1999 on 4 July.

(15)    Drafting of Myanmar Medical Council Law (Draft) Discussed

    The fourth meeting to draft the Myanmar Medical Council Law (Draft)
was held  at Food and Drug Administration Centre in Yangon on 4 July.
Present on the occasion were Director of Medical Services the
directors-general of departments under the ministry, the rectors,
officials of Attorney-General's Office and President of Myanmar Red
Cross Society.
