Burmese junta warns against unrest; Security beefed up in Rangoon

YANGON, Aug. 7: Myanmar?s military junta has warned civil servants to
guard against unrest and plots to overthrow the regime during upcoming
anniversaries that mark mass anti-military demonstrations 11 years ago,
news reports said today.

Traitors were attempting to seize power under the pretext of democracy
in cooperation with broadcasting stations under the influence of
?neo-colonialists?, Lieutenant General Khin Nyunt, said in a speech to
civil servants yesterday, local newspapers reported.

The junta has reportedly tightened surveillance of foreigners entering
the country as tourists, to prevent foreign pro-democracy activists from
entering Myanmar during the sensitive months of August and September.

In Bangkok, overseas Myanmar dissident groups acknowledged that efforts
were under way to foster a new uprising against the military this year
although they admitted that the movement still lacked a ?spark?. ? DPA

The warning of Burmese leader came in the midst of rumors in the country
that there have been growing discontents among the civil servants.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in Rangoon in advance of the 11th
Anniversary of 8.8.88 People?s Uprising in Burma. The armed forces are
seen with visible numbers in downtown City, particularly around Sule
Pagoda and Mahar Bandhula Park.

Exiled Burma pro-democracy groups have planned to organize
demonstrations in front of Burmese embassies in various countries on the
11th Anniversary of the great uprising. However, the situation inside
Burma remains calm and unlikely to break out any major outburst.
