Israeli Firm to Install More Phone Lines for Myanmar

YANGON (Aug. 10) XINHUA - An Israeli company will install a total of
6,000 more auto-telephone lines in Myanmar as part of the country's
auto-telephone system expansion project, the New Light of Myanmar
newspaper reported Tuesday. 

Under a contract signed here Monday between the Telrad
Telecommunications and Electronic Industries Ltd of Israel and the
state-run Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, the Israeli company is to
supply telephone exchange equipment, cables and telephones for the
project. 

It was the second contract signed between the two since June 1996 to
install the auto-telephone system in Myanmar. 

There are a total of 225,164 telephone lines operating in the country
and the number of telephone exchange stations has reached 523. 

Meanwhile, the CDMA mobile telephone system has an initial 3,000 lines
in operation in the country since its introduction in 1997. E-mail is
also being used in the country. 

According to official statistics, foreign companies involved in the
installation of new telephone systems in Myanmar in recent years include
those from Australia, Israel, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the United
States.
