(1) Implementation of Multi-sectoral Development Projects in Kachin State

        Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and
National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected preparations for construction of
the bridge across Nanhsanyan Creek on Bhamo-Myitkyina Road in Waingmaw
Township, Kachin State on 15 August. The Nanhsanyan Creek Bailey Bridge
is 300 feet long and 12 feet wide and it can bear 20 ton of loads.
 
    Then they went to Pyilonchantha orphan youth parahita development
centre in Myitkyina and presented rice and clothes to  the development
centre. They also went to training school for development of youths
from border areas in Myitkyina where the Secretary-1 presented clothes,
books and stationery and goods.

    Afterwards, they proceeded to the People's Hospital in Myitkyina where
they inspected ward for children, special intensive care unit and
rehabilitation hospital  and the Bawathit (New Life) Car Servicing of
the hospital for the drug addicts. The Secretary-1 and party were seen
off at Myitkyina Airport by officials concerned, national race leader
of Special Region-1 U Za Khun Ting Ring and members and national race
leader of Special Region-2 U Zaw Mai and members.

    They went to the site of Sinkham port, 20 miles downstream Bhamo and
were reported on arrangements for Shweli-Bhamo and Shweli-Sinkham roads
and international ports for transport of import and export of goods and
construction of Tatlakay port in Bhamo. The Sinkham port, 1.563
kilometres long and 600 metres wide, will be built at the site, 20
miles downstream Bhamo, and it will be able to handle 3,920,000 tons of
cargo. Three ships capable carrying 500 tons each can berth at the
wharf at the same time and it can handle 200,000 tons of cargo a  year.
A 500-ton container ship can berth at the container yard which will be
able to handle 320,000 tons of cargo a year.

    Secretary-1 inspected the 66-kv sub-power station in Bhamo. He was
reported on construction of 66-kv Kyaukpahto-Shwegu-Bhamo grid project
and distribution of power to townships. The plans to boost power supply
to Bhamo  will become developed after completion of the modern port.
 
    He then attended the opening of multimedia classrooms at Basic
Education High School No.1 and BEHS No.2 in Bhamo. With the assistance
of the school boards of trustees and well-wishers, multimedia
classrooms are being opened at basic education schools in the entire
nation, enabling students to show their ability by using advanced
techniques and teaching aids. In implementing the education promotion
programmes, computer-based electronic apparatus and new teaching-aids
and methods are being applied for emergence of an international-level
education system.
 
    Modern education system is to develop the spiritual and physical
ability of the student. At present, multimedia classrooms are gaining
success more than expected due to the efforts of the teachers and the
students and assistance of school boards of trustees. Opening of
multimedia classrooms has led to emergence of brilliant students in the
entire nation and harmonious progress of education opportunities.
 
    As stability and peace and tranquillity have prevailed in Kachin State 
since 1994 and all the national people of Kachin State are enjoying the good 
results of peace and tranquillity and stability. With the regional stability 
and peace and tranquillity, the Government and national people can join hands 
in striving for regional development. With a view to ensuring the smooth 
transport, Bala Min Htin Bridge across Ayeyawady River was opened last year 
and as a result, people can travel
conveniently from Myitkyina to Bhamo through Waingmaw on the eastern bank of 
Ayeyawady River. Maliyan Bridge was opened on 15 August and arrangements are 
being made to build another three bridges so that people can travel along 
Bhamo-Myitkyina route in a half-day.
 
    A 66 KV sub-power station was completed in Bhamo on 15 August  and it
can supply power for Bhamo, Mansi, Shwegu and Momauk Townships.
Arrangements have been made to extend and upgrade the runway of Bhamo
Airport and with the development of infrastructure, efforts are to be
made for the development of production works. A border trade system has
been practised for the development of commercial activities. Now,
arrangements are being made to build a modern container port in Bhamo
Township with the aim of promoting the trade volume and commercial
activities with Yunan Province of China. In the near future, the trade
between two countries will be thriving, and as a result, Bhamo will see
more development, and the living conditions of local people will improve. 

(2) Commander of Yunnan Province Military Command (YPMC) Arrives

    A Chinese military delegation led by Commander of the Yunnan Province
Military Command (YPMC) of Chinese People's Liberation Army Maj-Gen Wang 
Jitang arrived Yangon by air on 17 August. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and 
Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff 
(Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo received Commander of the Yunnan Province Military 
Command (YPMC) of Chinese People's Liberation Army Maj-Gen Wang Jitang and 
party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence on the same day.

(3) Planning Skills Grade-1 Course Opened 

    The Planning Skills Grade-1 Course No. 25 for deputy heads of 
State/Division and District Planning Departments of the Ministry of National 
Planning and Economic Development was opened at the meeting hall of National 
Archives Department in Yangon on 17 August. Altogether 83 trainees  are 
attending the course.
 
(4) Postgraduate Diploma Course No.1 on Hospital Administration Ends

    Postgraduate Diploma Course No.1 on Hospital Administration of the 
Medical Science Department concluded at the department on 17 August. The 
six-month course began on 15 February 1999. The aims of the course are  to 
enable medical superintendents to solve the problems concerning the hospital 
administration and to give the best service with the internal might for 
progress of the hospitals.
 
     The Ministry of Health and other ministries have opened 693 hospitals
and another 43 in border areas. In addition to giving medical
treatment, the hospitals at present are also giving priority to the
disease control, medical education and medical research. Emergence of
qualified and experienced medical superintendents will lead to the
development of hospitals. The course had taught data on hospitals,
accounting, financial subject, administration, management, treatment.The 
development in national health education and care programmes, advancement of 
treatment, introduction of cost-sharing health system and production of 
qualified health staff in implementing the National Health Plan were 
elaborated.
                   
(5) Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts  Arrives

    A delegation led by Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh
Mr. Kalpa Ranjan Chakma arrived Yangon by air on 17 August to study
agriculture, environmental conservation and forestry in hilly regions in 
Myanmar.

(6) International Exhibition-Yangon on 23-26 Sept
        
        The International Exhibition-Yangon '99 organized by Laser
World Co Ltd will be held in (Defence Services) Convention Hall from 23
to 26 September. A total of 65 foreign, local and joint-  venture
companies from Japan, Germany, Chinese-Taipei, Australia, Italy,
Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong kong, England, the
United States, ROK, Czech and Vietnam will take 141 showrooms and sell
computer and spare parts, electronic accessories, sewing machines,
security equipment, household goods, personal goods, construction
materials, engineering instruments, furniture, foodstuff, cosmetics and
steel goods and so on at the exhibition. The exhibition will present
sales promotion fashion shows every day. Admission is free.

(7) Opium, Arms Seized in Kutkai
        
        A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit
and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of
Daw Gyan Hsa, 50, who lives in Monyulay Village of Kutkai Township on 4
August. The authorities seized 64 cakes of opium weighing 121.81676
kilograms. According to further information, the team searched the
house of Aik Ngo (a) Yan Tin Shin, 40, Monyulay Village. They seized
eight cakes of opium weighing 11.10394 kilograms, arms and ammunition.
Action is taken against them under the law.
