Extradition pact cleared

Burmese authorities will allow the extradition of drug suspects to Thailand
under a new accord on co-operation in the suppression of trafficking along the
border.
Agreement was reached during a two-day meeting in Ranong of senior Thai and
Burmese officials involved in drug suppression which ended yesterday.
Payon Pansri, the secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control
Board, said Burma agreed to the extradition of suspects wanted in Thailand.
It did not apply if the suspects were Burmese, he said.
The delegations briefed each other and exchanged the names of officials
deployed along major border checkpoints like in Tak, Ranong, and Burma's
Myawaddy and Kaw Thaung, where more co-operative efforts were planned.
In future they would share the records relating to drugs and chemicals used in
their production and organise joint training sessions on chemical precursors
and common procedures in handling drug cases.
Burmese police chief Pol Maj-Gen Soe Win agreed opium plantations existed in
Burma but said his government was trying to reduce the area by encouraging
locals to grow other crops and raise farm animals instead.
He said Burma is not capable of producing illicit substances.
