Burmese democracy leader backs dissidents

The leader of the opposition National League for Democracy in Burma, Aung
San Suu Kyi, has refused to condemn dissidents who have called for an
uprising next month.

In an interview with the French news agency AFP, she said that although her
party had not been involved in the dissidents' campaign, it would never
disown its allies who fought for democracy. The NLD won elections held in
1990 but the military junta refused to allow it to form a government. Aung
San Suu Kyi also accused the military government of using the dissidents'
campaign as a pretext for clamping down on security throughout the country.

The Burmese military authorities said last week that they had arrested more
than thirty people in connection with the dissident movement. The movement
is calling for an uprising on the ninth of September 1999, a date which they
refer to as the day of the four nines.
