ONGOING DEMONSTRATIONS AND PROTESTS

Ongoing Demonstrations and Protests in Burma
********************************************************
24th August 1999

It is only 2 weeks away before the 9/9/99 comes. In Prome students gathered
around the Statue of General Aung San on Lammadaw Street and protested
against the SPDC calling for change. The students were demonstrating for
half an hour and the troops arrived and dispersed the demonstarting crowds
that were more than 1000. Neither the AFP nor any other foreign news
reporters could reach Prome on the 24th of August 1999. No casualities have
been reported. More than 200 students have been detained by the military
intelligence. But the outrage and frustration suffered by the students are
so clear and the demonstrations were quite one of the most distinct
signatures of the students who are determined to transform Burma into a
democratic nation where all people will enjoy their freedom and basic human
rights.

Similar protests are reported to have been staged by the students in Paung
Dae, Natalin and Paung Te, the birthplace of Ne Win. Despite the small
protests in the latter towns, the working people and the farmers could still
join the protests and the 9/9/99 uprising is a still a possibility according
to observers. In fact, the dissident groups abroad need not instigate the
9/9/99 uprising for the reason that the students and the working people and
the farmers have been frustrated and disappointed with the SPDC's rule that
can bear nothing effective for the country but fear and the downcast economy
mis-managed by the intelligence community.
