Back To The Past-Today
Thai Hero's Monument Built with Shan Assistance

5 September 1969
Construction of a monument for the celebrated Thai hero, King Naresuan the
Great, begun today at the village of Muangngai, Chiangdao District in
Chiangmai. It is about 30 kilometers south of the Thai-Burma border.

The ceremony was presided over by Nirandorn Chaiyanarm, Governor of Chiangmai
Province.

The previous monument, built after Naresuan's death in 1605, in Burma's Shan
State, was bulldozed by the Burma Army in 1960. Shan soldiers from the Shan
United Revolutionary Army brought back the bricks from the ruins and presented
them to Governor Nirandorn, who needed them in order to lay the foundation for
the new monument.

King Naresuan had assisted the Shans against Burmese domination. He was on his
way to support Prince Khamkaifah of Hsenwi who was resisting King Nyaungyan's
invading armies, when he suddenly fell ill and died. His death cost the Shans
their independence.
