Khun Sa Released From Prison
7 September 1974
Khun Sa a.k.a Chang Sheefu was freed by the Burmese authorities from his long
imprisonment in Mandalay today.

Khun Sa, who became militia chief of Loimaw in 1960 was arrested on 20 October
1069 in Taunggyi. His custody sent his militia unit, renamed Shanland United
Army, to the resistance's fold.

A dramatic kidnapping of 2 Russian doctors in Taunggyi on 16 April 1973 and
the
negotiations that followed had resulted in his gaining freedom, said the SUA
source.

The government, however, vehemently denied Khun Sa's release had anything
to do
with the abduction of the two Russians, who were delivered to Thai authorities
earlier.

There were also many leaders among the resistance who believed the whole thing
was orchestrated by the junta with the aim to groom Khun Sa for his eventual
"return" to the nationalist movement.
