The statement for the welcoming demonstration of the=20
( 9/9/99 ) pro-democracy uprising in Burma
=
Date 3rd September 1999
Since independence from the British colonist in 1948, Burma has =
remained plagued by civil wars between successive Rangoon military =
regimes and self-determination
inspried enthnic minorities groups. Fortunately, in 1988, nation wide =
pro-democracy uprising erupted, pushing people of all walks of life to =
take to the streets, and clamoured for democracy. Consequently, the =
popular movement was brutally crushed by putsch, resultion in hundreds =
of thousands of innocent unarmed people being massacred, and also forced =
many more into exile. However, the remaining inexorable democraacy =
forces both inside and outside Burma have been continuing their fight =
unabated.
In may 1990, SLORC ( now SPDC ) organized a general election, which =
can be run for by every registered political party, with a strong =
promise to hand power over to the victors. The NLD, a main opposition =
party-led by Aung San Suu Kyi, got majority seats while MNDF, Mon =
National Democratic Front- led by Nai Tun Thein, won their own seats =
respectively. SPDC, notorious for its nerarious actions, reneged on the =
given pledge, ignored the outcomes of the election and refused power to =
the winners. Moreover, the junta arrested scores of elected people =
respresentatives and put in jail. There were four Mon representatives =
among those reppresentatives arrested and still jailed. Therefore, on =
this special occasion, we, O.M.N.S.O, would like to urge the =
international democracy-loving community to take dffective action =
against the ruling Burma's military Junta, and to join hand in hand with =
us in our fight for democracy in Burma.
